Every 1st of December since 1988, the world celebrates World AIDS Day. Another year to remind ourselves about the gains made and the devastating effects HIV/AIDS has on Nigeria and the world.
Today, the Nigerian Infectious Diseases Society joins the world in celebrating its members who have been in the vanguard of the battle against AIDS in Nigeria. The theme of this year’s event is ‘Putting Ourselves to the Test: Achieving Equity to end HIV’. We believe that with a concerted effort from all stakeholders, we can end the HIV pandemic.
The NIDS will also want to use this opportunity to call on healthcare facilities to implement the ‘opt-out’ HIV testing strategy where all patients seeking care are tested for HIV without needing prior HIV counselling. We believe this method will remove the stigma from HIV testing and discover more patients increasing their access to care and treatment.
Today is another day we celebrate the outstanding achievements in the war against HIV while contemplating the journey ahead as we continue to combat a virus responsible for millions of deaths over the past decades. We envision an end in sight, and we will triumph.
