NIDS Statement on World TB Day 2023
NIDS STATEMENT ON WORLD TB DAY 2023
Today, on World Tuberculosis Day, the Nigerian Infectious Diseases Society (NIDS) joins the global community in highlighting the urgent need to prevent, diagnose, and treat tuberculosis (TB). This year’s theme, “The Clock is Ticking,” serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of this disease and the critical need for action.
Nigeria has one of the highest rates of TB and multidrug-resistant TB in the world, making it imperative to implement effective TB control measures. The NIDS urges the government and stakeholders to prioritize early detection, accurate diagnosis, and prompt treatment of TB. This can be achieved through increased availability of TB diagnostics, including molecular testing and culture-based approaches, and providing appropriate treatment regimens and support services such as counselling to improve treatment outcomes.
The fight against TB requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders, including policymakers, civil society organizations, and affected communities. The NIDS is committed to collaborating with these stakeholders to increase awareness about TB, improve access to diagnosis and treatment, and reduce the stigma associated with the disease.
As we commemorate World TB Day, we must recommit ourselves to accelerating efforts to end TB. This requires strengthening health systems to ensure equitable access to quality TB care, advocating for TB elimination at all levels, and implementing evidence-based strategies to address the TB epidemic in Nigeria.
The clock is ticking, and we must act now to end TB in Nigeria.
