NIDS STATEMENT ON WORLD MALARIA DAY 2022

WORLD MALARIA DAY 2022

As we celebrate World Malaria Day on 25 April every year, it’s a reminder of the havoc and deadly impact of malaria on vulnerable populations in Nigeria. This preventable and treatable infectious disease causes insurmountable pain and suffering in Nigerian communities alone accounting for 31.9% of malaria deaths worldwide in 2020.

This year’s theme is, ‘Harness innovation to reduce the malaria disease burden and save lives. The theme recognizes the stalled progress in lowering the burden of malaria, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and the slow technological advancement in vaccine development, vector control, diagnostics, gene-based therapy and other novel approaches crucial to ending malaria.

The Nigerian Infectious Diseases Society (NIDS) would like to invite the government and relevant stakeholders to increase investment in all aspects of malaria research. There is a need for more training in the diagnosis and treatment of malaria to reduce unnecessary treatment, especially in the adult population leading to increased risk of drug resistance.

Malaria has been responsible for millions of deaths since medieval times. We have to innovate and deploy new approaches to crush this ancient threat.
