NIDS STATEMENT ON 2022 WORLD TB DAY

Every March 24th, we celebrate World TB Day to mark the day Dr Robert Koch announced to the world the discovery of the bacterium that causes tuberculosis thus paving the way for the diagnosis, treatment and control of the second deadliest infectious disease in the world.

The theme of this year’s World TB Day is, “Invest to End TB. Save Lives. The Nigeria Infectious Diseases Society (NIDS) will like to use this medium to call on the government and other relevant stakeholders to make the necessary commitment of human and material resources in the fight against tuberculosis.

One of the key lessons from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is the value of a united concerted effort in turning the tide against a disease. Record-breaking gains were made in the battle against COVID-19 because of the huge investments infused into it. There is a need to ramp up investment in all aspects of tuberculosis care to mitigate the effects of a disease responsible for 1.5m deaths in 2020.

The NIDS wishes to reiterate her commitment to stopping the scourge of TB. In collaboration with our partners both foreign and domestic, we will continue to carry out relevant research, educate and manage our patients. We sincerely hope that this disease will soon be of only historical interest and the world will be rid of this deadly ailment.
