NIDS Advocacy visit to the NCDC

The President of Nigeria Infectious diseases society (NIDS) Prof. Dimie Ogoina led members of the executive committees and board of trustees on an advocacy visit to the Director-General of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Dr Ifedayo Adetifa on 1st March 2022.
Prof. Ogoina congratulated the DG NCDC on his appointment, described the existing working relationship between the NIDS and NCDC which dates back to the inception of NCDC formed through the tenures of the earlier DGs. He highlighted the participation of the former DG and his departments in previous NIDS conferences, and various contributions of the NIDS members as direct staff of NCDC and/or its partners in the prevention and control of infectious diseases in Nigeria. Prof Ogoina expressed the desire of the NIDS to partner with the NCDC in advancing ID control in Nigeria through advocacy, research, education and training, policy and programme development and implementation, among others. He urged the DG to utilize the NIDS and its vast human resources to further improve the work of the NCDC.
Dr Adetifa responded by thanking the NIDS for reaching out to him, acknowledging its stellar BOT, quality of and strength of the members of the Society. He acknowledged the potential of partnership between the NCDC and NIDS and identified some key areas of interest including but not limited to research into Lassa fever epidemiology, improving antimicrobial stewardship, and understanding the epidemiology of monkeypox, among many others areas.
The Director Department of Preparedness and Response, NCDC Dr John Oladejo expressed his appreciation for previous and ongoing support being provided by NIDS members to the NCDC and hoped that further support is provided, improving the quality of the response management in the EOC.
The Deputy Director Department of Programs and Knowledge Management, NCDC Dr Sikiru Badaru reiterated the need for NIDS to join the NCDC’s drive to develop a research agenda and policy targeting Lassa fever, cholera and other infectious diseases of public health importance.
Others in attendance included Prof Abdulsalami Nasidi (Member BOT NIDS and foundation DG NCDC), Prof John Idoko (Member BOT NIDS), Dr Mahmood Dalhat (VP1 NIDS), Dr Mike Iroezindu (Editor-in-Chief, JNIDS), Dr Vivian Kwaghe (Deputy Editor JNIDS, NIDS).
The meeting was concluded with a group photo opportunity.
