NIDS...a unique group of leading Health Professionals
The Nigerian Infectious Diseases Society (NIDS) was inaugurated in July 2009 as a unique group of leading health professionals from diverse backgrounds united by the common goal of promoting a Nigerian Society which is devoid of infectious and communicable diseases for the well- being of the entire population.
The Society is duly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) of Nigeria and has a constitution and a distinguished Board of Trustees in place. It consists of a multidisciplinary membership including health workers, scientists, researchers, public health practitioners, veterinarians, and other individuals with interest in the development of the field of Infectious Disease in Nigeria including areas of health policy, advocacy for better approaches to control of infectious diseases, clinical practice, public health, research, and training.
The Executive Committee (EXCO) oversees the day to day running of the Society as guided by the constitution. The inaugural meeting of NIDS was held in July 2009 in Kano, followed by yearly Annual General Meeting and Scientific Meeting (AGSM).
Since inauguration, the Society has made some modest strides in engaging stakeholders in infectious and communicable diseases while providing the necessary framework for training, research, and global partnership in the field.
It has interfaced successfully with relevant Federal agencies and partners such as National Agency for Control of AIDS (NACA), National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Institute of Human Virology of Nigeria (IHVN), African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET), among others.
The development of Infectious Diseases training curricula for both the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) and the West African College of Physicians (WACP) was achieved by members and trustees of the Society.
Other achievements of the Society include growing membership from diverse professional groups, creation of a website which is currently being upgraded, and establishment of an NIDS academic journal (Journal of the NIDS-JNIDS) which awaits its inaugural publication.
The establishments of vibrant journal clubs and Infectious and Tropical Diseases working groups, Hospital Infection Prevention and Control Committees, and Antimicrobial Stewardship Committees have been encouraged in training centres with a view to improving infectious diseases control and producing a potential multi-site research network.
Despite these modest achievements, the NIDS in partnership with stakeholders is poised to play a more defining role in combating the threat of infectious and communicable diseases in Nigeria.
To advance the understanding and the prevention and control of infectious and communicable diseases in Nigeria.
• To foster greater collaboration with individuals, groups, governments and non- governmental organizations in the prevention and control of infectious and communicable diseases in Nigeria.
• To advise and provide leadership in all aspects of infectious and communicable diseases in Nigeria, including formulation of policies, education and training, research, and clinical practice.
• To seek to promote and protect the interest of all who are infected or affected by communicable and infectious diseases in Nigeria.
To advance the prevention and control of infectious diseases in Nigeria through advocacy, training, research, and partnership.
To keep Nigerians safe from recurring communicable diseases and threats of epidemic and pandemic outbreaks caused by them.
